Thomas Tuchel has secret weapon up his sleeve as Chelsea look to secure Wesley Fofana transfer

Chelsea have turned their attention to pursuing a deal to sign Leicester City centre-back Wesley Fofana this summer. The Blues missed out on Jules Kounde, who has now agreed a deal to join Barcelona, with Thomas Tuchel desperate to bring in at least one more central defender.

Talks between Chelsea and Fofana’s entourage have been held this week, football.london understands. Personal terms with the 21-year-old are not expected to be an issue. However, it’s striking a deal with Leicester that could prove a stumbling block.

Fofana put pen-to-paper on a new contract extension in March, with the Frenchman’s deal at the King Power Stadium now not due to expire until the summer of 2027. This puts Leicester in a really strong position, meaning there is no immediate rush whatsoever to sanction the sale of the highly-rated defender.

Leicester sold Harry Maguire to Manchester United in 2019 for a world-record £80million and the Foxes could push for a fee over that if they did allow Fofana to leave. Brendan Rodgers is a huge fan of Fofana and sees him very much in his plans at Leicester.

Chelsea, though, see a young defender with all of the ingredients to develop into a world-class player one day. The asking price of Leicester could force Chelsea to look elsewhere, however.

The Blues need to find a way to try and force Leicester’s demand down, financially, and that could be by offering them a player in return. Levi Colwill is a player Leicester very much like and have a strong interest in.

Numerous Premier League clubs, including the Foxes, are showing an interest in signing Chelsea’s 19-year-old central defender this summer, football.london has been told. After excelling in the Championship last season whilst on loan at Huddersfield Town, Colwill’s stocks are high right now.

It appears Tuchel does not see him as a key member of the first-team squad as he continues to pursue other defenders. For Colwill, his reputation may never be this high again, and he could look to leave the club if the right offers comes his way.

Tuchel wants to bring in at least one more centre-back this summer, but the German would prefer two. Fofana, as mentioned above, is on the list, as is Presnel Kimpembe, Josko Gvardiol and Milan Skriniar.

Colwill seems to be behind Thiago Silva, Kalidou Koulibaly, Malang Sarr and Trevoh Chalobah in the pecking order at Stamford Bridge – raising big question marks over his future at the club. So, Chelsea could look to use the teenage defender as a makeweight in a deal to sign Fofana.

As previously referred to, the Foxes are huge admirers of the Cobham graduate and while not wanting to sell Fofana, if the Frenchman raised his intent to leave, then Leicester would be put in a difficult situation. However, being given a direct replacement for Fofana – and some money – may soften the club’s stance somewhat.

Leicester also expressed their interest in Sarr earlier in the year, football.london understands. Sarr, 23, hasn’t set the world alight since joining Chelsea but Leicester have clearly been impressed by what they’ve seen.
