According to rumours, Romelu Lukaku may be getting close to making a return to Inter Milan after spending just one season with the Chelsea Football Club.
Lukaku, who has fallen out of favour at Chelsea under Thomas Tuchel, had already stated his desire to return to his former club in a controversial interview with Sky Sports in Italy last December. This interview took place before Lukaku’s time at Chelsea. Now, it has been reported by Sky Sports that Inter executives would meet with the striker’s attorney on Tuesday in order to discuss the possibility of returning to Serie A.
Although Inter CEO Giuseppe Marotta said that the team is interested in re-signing him, he stated that the club is in “no rush” to do so at this time. A club record fee of £97.5 million was paid to bring the 29-year-old back to Chelsea during the summer of 2017.
As a consequence of this, the transfer turned out to be a bad decision because the Belgian had a tough time adapting to life in West London and has only contributed eight goals in 26 Premier League games so far this season. If the player does leave, Chelsea may be able to unload him for a considerably cheaper price than what they paid Inter for him when they originally acquired him.
As a result of the recent conclusion of the £4.25 billion club takeover by a consortium led by Todd Boehly, Chelsea can now operate normally in advance of the summer transfer window. This affords the club the opportunity to finalise their verbal agreement with Sevilla defender Jules Kounde, who is interested in joining Chelsea.
After the takeover, it is expected that head coach Tuchel will be ready to begin the process of rebuilding the squad at Stamford Bridge. At the conclusion of the season, he gave a speech in which he described what he anticipates from possible targets.
“We have clear ideas for the profiles and characteristic of these players [Chelsea want],” he said at the end of the season. “It is not like you put a name on the list and then you get the player.
“You have to convince the player, you have to speak to other clubs and convince yourself this is the player, so there is normally a lot of work and it will be the same to be competitive next season, while, like everybody else, tries to close the gap to us, while the two top teams are what they are. A benchmark of consistency. This is the situation and from there we do our very best to be competitive because this is what we want to be.”
After losing to Liverpool in both the FA Cup and the Carabao Cup finals this season, Tuchel’s team was unable to bring home any trophies at the conclusion of the campaign. Despite finishing in third place in the Premier League, the Blues were 18 points behind Liverpool, who were in second place. Although it will be one of the goals for the upcoming season to battle side by side with their adversaries, it is possible that they will have to do so without their striker, Lukaku.
