The Chelsea skipper, Cesar Azpilicueta, allegedly had an agreement with Marina Granovskaia on his departure from the club before the search for a new owner started.
It was reported by the Associated Press that Azpilicueta and the club’s director had struck a deal in which he would be permitted to say goodbye to the Blues at his discretion.
That is, until Roman Abramovich decided to put his empire up for sale, only to be sanctioned by the United Kingdom government as a result of his actions.
All transfer decisions will now be made by the Russian’s successor, which means that the agreement reached between Azpilicueta and Granovskaia will be passed on to the next person in charge.
Chelsea have already taken steps to ensure that their captain will remain with the club for another season, by unilaterally extending his contract until 2023.
He was reaching the conclusion of his contract, but Chelsea took some of the decision-making power away from him.
He might yet say goodbye to Chelsea this summer after a decade of solid service, with Barcelona reportedly interested in acquiring various stars from Stamford Bridge this summer
Nevertheless, Abramovich’s successor may decide to renege on the agreement Azpilicueta reached with Granovskaia, leaving him with little option but to stay for at least one more season.
Azpi is a real professional in every way.
It seems that Azpilicueta will not be forced to move away from South West London, regardless of the circumstances surrounding his departure from the club.
It would be unreasonable to expect anything less from the defender who has practically won it all during his time as Chelsea’s captain.
If he is forced to go, he will do so without a fuss or a fight, but he will not do so without a heartfelt farewell.
Since his transfer from Marseille to the European champions in 2012, ‘Dave’ has performed well for them.
The 32-year-old has appeared in more than 300 games, won a number of trophies, and played in almost as many positions.
Azpilicueta’s dedication will never be called into question, despite the fact that his legs are beginning to tire.
While we don’t want the voyage to come to an end just yet, we understand that all wonderful things must come to an end at some point.
