Report: Chelsea player does u-turn over his future and decides that he will be leaving

Antonio Rudiger has reportedly decided he wants to leave Chelsea next season as talks over a new contract continue to stall.

This is according to The Athletic, who suggest the defender is ‘resigned to leaving next year’ because of the uncertainty surrounding his renewal.

Rudiger’s deal runs out in June 2022, meaning he will be able to speak with foreign clubs about a potential move on the first day of January.

Is the price right?

Conversations with the German over extending his stay have been halted due to a disagreement over wage demands.

The 28-year-old wants the Blues board to double his salary, taking him closer to the £200,000-a-week (Athletic) mark.

However, Chelsea have so far met these demands with a £140,000-a-week proposal.

Several Athletic sources claim neither party are planning to alter their stance, which is causing an uncomfortable standoff.

It had been widely believed that staying at Stamford Bridge was Rudiger’s primary choice, as reported on the Transfer Window Podcast.

Yet – as per the Athletic – over the last few days, the centre-back’s decision has been reversed.

He is apparently prepared to hear the price opposing teams would be willing to offer, ahead of a possible transfer next summer.

Losing the barmy, bearded, battle-hardened warrior is almost unthinkable, considering his importance to Thomas Tuchel’s side.

Few across Europe have matched Rudiger’s form following the appointment of Tuchel last season

But sometimes, money talks.

If Chelsea cannot push themselves to write a fresh cheque for the £29m (BBC) arrival from Roma, then he will be out of the door before too long.
