Romelu Lukaku’s agent announced in a statement that he would negotiate his client’s future with the new Chelsea owners.
He scored twice in a 2-2 draw with Wolves on Saturday. However, goals from Francisco Trincao and Conor Coady earned Wolves a point.
Lukaku now has 14 goals in all competitions after a brace separated by 138 seconds. Despite this, the £98 million Inter signing has been reduced to a supporting role at Chelsea.
This season, the 29-year-old missed three Premier League starts and four Champions League knockout round games. Lukaku is fighting for his future at Stamford Bridge, according to former Blue Joe Cole.
His relationship with the club has worsened since his fiery interview with the Italian press in late December, in which he discussed his future and expressed discontent with his return to the Blues. Toby Alderweireld expressed his dissatisfaction with Thomas Tuchel’s approach at Stamford Bridge, sparking heated arguments with the manager.
Federico Pastorello has been tight-lipped on his striker’s future, despite acknowledging there was a “issue” with his striker’s status at the club, with rumours pointing to a summer exit.
Pastorello has said: “I’m not the one to discuss technical choices, but it is obvious that there was a problem. The numbers, however, must be weighted: he is the best scorer of the team this season, even with a lower playing time compared to his teammates.
“The situation must be carefully evaluated, now there’s a Champions League spot to secure, and the FA Cup final: Romelu is totally focused on that, we have not talked about anything else.
“It’s nonsense to speculate on negotiations: Chelsea have just defined the takeover of the club, we still don’t know our new interlocutors, let alone if we can hypothesize talks with Inter, AC Milan or whatever. We have to be patient and wait.”
Tuchel may have to make a decision soon since Lukaku is under contract until the summer of 2026. He returned to the Blues last year after a seven-year absence after his first tenure from 2011 to 2014, but his return has been underwhelming so far.
