Chelsea is close to agreeing on a new deal with defender Antonio Rudiger, according to Goal (h/t Express). The new contract will keep him at Stamford Bridge for a few more years.
Rudiger joined the club in 2017 after excelling at AS Roma and has since grown into one of the Blues’ most dependable defenders. He is at the pinnacle of his abilities right now, having hardly put a foot wrong for manager Thomas Tuchel.
The Blues manager will be relieved to learn of this development, which will undoubtedly strengthen the club’s transfer market. Chelsea seemed to be on the verge of losing Rudiger for free in the summer when his contract with the club expires.
Due to his contract status at Stamford Bridge, the 28-year-old has been linked with Bayern Munich, Real Madrid, and Paris Saint-Germain. With Chelsea making improvements, he should get good news about his contract sooner rather than later.
Shifting the goalposts
Bayern Munich is reportedly eyeing another Chelsea defender, Andreas Christensen, as a replacement for Rudiger, who is due to leave at the end of the season. Like Rudiger, the academy product is out of contract this summer.
So far, the Dane has given no hint that he would stay with the London club beyond the summer. With Bayern Munich circling, it seems that Chelsea might lose the brilliant 25-year-old for nothing. The Bosman transfer of Niklas Sule to Borussia Dortmund looks to be starting a chain reaction that might lead to the loss of Christensen.
Chelsea’s defensive talents’ contract predicament has piqued the interest of numerous large clubs, with Rudiger, Christensen, and captain Cesar Azpilicueta all nearing the end of their current contracts with the club. Three of Tuchel’s first-choice defenders, losing all three in the same transfer window, and for free, would be a tremendous blow to the German.
Bayern Munich seems to be quite interested in the scene since several of the greatest centre-backs in the Premier League will be available for free at the conclusion of the season. They definitely have choices as well, and with the Bundesliga club switching their focus from Rudiger to Christensen, it seems that we will not be able to catch a break.
Sule was lost to competitors by the German giants. Bayern Munich will almost certainly step up their attempts to find a replacement for the player. They have a young and excellent defender in Christensen, who will be entering the peak years of his career shortly.
Chelsea, meantime, will concentrate on re-signing Christensen and Azpilicueta after Rudiger inks a new deal. Tuchel will be hoping that the club can straighten things out quickly, as we continue to race against the clock to get the deal done.
