Chelsea confirm new Covid case as three more players to miss Man City trip

Chelsea has announced the presence of a new positive Covid case in their squad ahead of their Premier League match against Manchester City.

As they have dropped 10 points behind leaders City, Thomas Tuchel’s team has seen a number of players suffer from Covid and injuries in recent weeks.

In the last week, Chelsea has played two Carabao Cup semi-final games against Tottenham, while City has had two free midweeks, with Tuchel’s roster stretched even further with Eduoard Mendy’s departure for the African Cup of Nations.

Ben Chilwell has been declared out for the season, while Reece James will miss the City trip after failing to recover from a previous injury, according to Tuchel.

Tuchel has also ruled out Trevoh Chalobah, while Andreas Christensen’s absence from Covid will further shake their back line.

“No news, which is good news,” Tuchel said before of the City trip. “Trevoh will be out, Reece James will be out, Ben Chilwell will be out.”

“We have one new positive Covid test with Andreas Christensen so he will be out of the game.”

Tuchel has been boosted by the return of full-back Kenedy from loan to cover Chilwell’s injury, but when asked how Chelsea can catch City in general, he said his selection will be impacted by fitness and injury limits at the Etihad on Saturday.

“With every player we get back, we get back belief, experience, and options,” he explained. We had N’Golo [Kante] and Thiago Silva on the bench in the last match, but they joined the group after one training session.

“We have a good squad with a great mindset, and you’re in the squad after one training session.” However, we are not at full strength. To catch Man City and finish first in the Premier League, we must outperform them, and to do so, we will need everyone’s help. As a result, we’re aiming to recover players.

“However, hearing Andreas has Covid after he returns from injury and plays so well, it’s a mental blow for everyone because you get a guy back and then it’s no.” It’s the equivalent of catching a fish.”
