Report: Chelsea want player who Nottingham Forest chose not to sign

The Sun (18/07; page 61) stated last week that Nottingham Forest had canceled their ambitions to sign goalkeeper Marcus Bettinelli. The 29-year-old could now be on his way to Chelsea in a surprise transfer.

Bettinelli was a regular in the Middlesbrough team last season. He was released by Neil Warnock though and is now a free agent.

Forest were in talks with the goalkeeper prior to signing Ethan Horvath last week on a free transfer after he left Club Brugge.

Now, he’s being lined up for a move to Stamford Bridge, with the Champions of Europe keen to sign him during the window, according to The Telegraph.

Chelsea are on the lookout for a new third-choice goalkeeper. Edouard Mendy is the current number one, but Willy Caballero has left.

Bettinelli would represent a pretty cheap option considering he’s available on a free, whilst he’d also boost Chelsea’s homegrown quota.

The experience second-tier stopper would surely jump at the chance to join a club like Chelsea, given he’s spent the majority of his career playing in the Football League.

He has made 137 appearances in the Championship and as a result, it’s no surprise Forest were keen to sign him.

Bettinelli to Chelsea: Will Forest regret not signing the goalkeeper?

It has to be said they probably won’t. Bettinelli is steady but good things are expected of Horvath who signed last week.

The American is three years younger than the ex-Fulham man and at 26, he’s relatively young for a goalkeeper.

Bettinelli won’t be going to play much at Chelsea. He will train with the first-choice goalkeepers and perhaps get the odd game in a domestic cup competition.

Good luck to him if he does head for Stamford Bridge but he wouldn’t have been an amazing signing for Forest anyway.
