‘Believe’: Sutton says Chelsea player could earn ‘legend status’ if he helps beat Madrid tonight

Chris Sutton felt Timo Werner could rid all of his past wrongs this season if he aided Chelsea into a Champions League final, writing for the Daily Mail.

Werner and the Blues are potentially 90 minutes away from reaching the finale. But first, they have to overcome Real Madrid later today.

Although the scores remain level at 1-1 from the first leg, Chelsea are gripping onto their away goal they secured in Spain.

Their advantage should have been greater had Werner and his colleges converted more of the chances they conjured up.

Madrid could have their captain and talisman Sergio Ramos returning for the game tonight, which may limit Thomas Tuchel’s team in attack.

However, Sutton felt that Werner could really punish the recovering centre-back and help his side past the Spanish champions.

“It sounds like Sergio Ramos will return for Real — in what would be his first start for the club since March 16,” said the former Chelsea striker.

“Werner would win any foot races against Ramos. He should go out there, help his team into a Champions League final and believe he can win them this competition.

“It’s been an indifferent season for Werner but guiding Chelsea to glory in Europe would earn him legend status.”

Werner would be remembered alongside the fabled 2012 Chelsea squad if they manage to beat Madrid.

Fernando Torres was the hero against Barcelona in the semi-finals nine years ago. He was infamously a centre-forward who struggled during his time with the Blues.

Now the stage is perfectly set for Werner to repeat this act and raise his profile from failure to famous.

Of course, Madrid shall have an entirely different say on the matter. Ramos in particular will do everything in his power to halt Werner and co.

The battle of Stamford Bridge awaits us all this evening and it could be a classic encounter.
